So you got that new phone you were lusting after all year, and want to make the most of it by taking Instagram-worthy pics. Well, with Carphone Warehouse’s handy guide to all things camera phone, it’s easy . . .

Do more mega pixels mean better quality photos?

Not necessarily. Just because a camera has loads of megapixels, it doesn’t mean it’s the best. There are a lot of elements to take into consideration when looking at camera specs, including ISO, shutter speed and aperture, but more megapixels do contribute to better quality photos.

What is HTC’s UltraPixel?

UltraPixel is essentially  HTC marketing term for its camera sensor. The UltraPixel camera is said to capture more that 300% more light than most leading 13MP smartphone cameras, while offering automatic image stabilisation. Put simply, it’s pretty good.

Can I use my camera underwater if I have a waterproof smartphone?

Yes, but it helps if you launch the camera beforehand. The Sony Xperia models all have dedicated shutter buttons, because using the touchscreen underwater can be a bit tricky

What is 4K?

In a nutshell, 4K refers to the quality of a display’s resolution of 1920 x 1080, which is the resolution that we patch YouTube videos on most high-end smart. 4K resolution on the other hand is 4096 x 2160. It’s worth noticing that some smartphones may be able to shoot in 4K, but as the screen resolution hasn’t advanced as quickly as the cameras, you won’t be able to watch it back in 4K quality. You will however be able to link it to a 4K TV.
